What to Expect After Upper Extremity Surgery

Depending on the nature of your surgery, you may be required to wear a splint for 3-6 weeks to avoid overstretching the tendons as you heal. Our hand therapists & occupational therapists can provide you with activity modification strategies to help you adjust to the splint if needed.

However, once the splint comes off, you’ll still need to continue rehabilitation. You’ll have limited mobility in the affected area, and stretching and strengthening the tendons will be necessary to ensure you restore full functionality. Our team will provide you with a tailored exercise program that addresses your needs and goals.

As you work through your rehabilitation program, our team will monitor your progress and adjust the exercises as needed. We’ll also work with you on functional training to help you relearn the fine motor skills necessary for many activities of daily living.

Finally, we’ll let you know when it’s safe to return to your favorite activities. The length of time you’ll spend on rehabilitation varies based on the nature of your surgery. You’ll likely have your full strength back after 12 weeks, but it can take up to 6 months to restore the full range of motion. Our occupational therapists can give you a detailed, personalized timeline.
