Our hand therapists will make custom splints for you
An orthosis is another name for a splint. Orthotics help align joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments while your broken bone heals for optimum healing and function. Specific injuries, including fractures of the wrist or hand, require the fabrication of an orthosis that is custom-made just for you.
The use of our hands is vital to our everyday life. Any injury to the wrist and/or hand carries the potential for severe limitations and loss of function. Proper identification and treatment of traumatic hand and wrist injuries are critical to preventing loss of function, nerve damage, joint restrictions, and persistent pain.
If you are dealing with a broken bone in your wrist(s) or hand(s), our hand therapists are here to help you! Our dedicated hand therapists will conduct a physical evaluation to examine the function of your wrist, hand, and fingers and create a custom orthotic specifically for your needs.
How our hand therapists can help you
At Ozark Physical Therapy Specialists in Mountain Home, AR, our hand therapists will help you along your road to recovery. We will start with a thorough evaluation of your injuries and determine the most appropriate treatment for you. Together, we will set goals that are most important to you.
During your therapy sessions, you will work one-on-one with your therapist on pain reduction, swelling control, range of motion, strength, coordination, and dexterity. Your therapist will also design a home exercise program for you to supplement your work in the clinic.
There are various interventions that a hand therapist uses to help you comfortably perform daily functions. This may include any combination of therapeutic exercises, mirror therapy, custom orthosis/splint design, pain management, manual therapy, taping, ergonomics, or compression therapy.
There are also different exercise tools that a hand therapist may have you perform to strengthen your upper extremity after an injury, such as working with putty, using a gripper, or using dumbbells.
Types of orthoses
There are several different types of orthoses we offer at our clinic. Some of the most common ones are as follows:
- Gutter
- Resting Hand
- Dorsal blocking orthosis
- Long arm orthosis (with or without wrist)
- Bicep-style long arm orthosis (for distal bicep tendon repairs)
- Variety of dynamic orthoses
- Mallet / tip protector
- C-splint
- Hand-based MP extension orthosis
- Forearm-based MP extension orthosis
- Wrist support

The cost and quality of orthotics vary. Whether or not custom orthotics can actually alleviate your condition depends on the type of pain you have, the degree of the discomfort, and your level of physical activity. No matter what you see on store shelves, there isn’t a “one size fits all” solution!
